An irreverent save-the-day pixel art adventure game

McPixel 3 is a pixel art game with an irreverent sense of humor that follows the adventures of the titular character, a wanna-be hero who constantly gets mixed up in a series of unbelievable situations. The game combines a variety of gameplay styles mostly inspired by retro games from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.

Among the gameplay styles included in the game is an aerial shooter style similar to games like Galaxy Shooter - Space Attack. It also has a beat-em-up style along the lines of games like the Streets of Rage Remake.

Lots of content with retro visuals

With 100 mind-blowing levels, McPixel 3 offers plenty of content to keep players engaged. This game boasts over 900 hilarious gags and nearly 1500 interactive items to ensure that each level presents new and unexpected challenges that will rack their brains. Additionally, players can explore over 20 minigames spanning various genres to add even more variety to the already chaotic gameplay experience.

A notable aspect of this game is its pixelated art style, boasting an impressive 258,924,600 pixels. This retro visual aesthetic, inspired by most titles from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, adds charm to the game and complements its offbeat humor. Furthermore, this game is designed to be accessible for many devices as it can run smoothly on a mobile device, an old computer, or on high-end consoles.

It's important to note that this title does contain crass situations and jokes, which may not be suitable for all players. This game's humor is often irreverent and relies on shock value to elicit laughs. While this may appeal to some players, it can also be a deterrent for those who prefer more toned-down or family-friendly content. So, keep that in mind when playing this game.

Explore the city, meet Steve, and collect coins

In McPixel 3, saving the day and coming up with crazy solutions will be rewarded. That's because you will get a gold prize and additional coins that you can use to unlock new levels. You can also spend these coins to clear blocked paths in McBurg, the city in which the game takes place and where you can find all the fun adventures.

At McBurg, you will find items from the levels you already played. There are also costumes scattered around the city, which you can don as you play. If you need more coins, you can go to the grassy hill on the edge of the city. This location is where you'll find the Devolver vault, which is full of gold that you can collect and use.

There are lots of people populating McBurg that you'll meet through all your adventures. One of them is Steve, and he can be in the weirdest and most unexpected of places. Finding him will transport you to the Steve level, where you will play as him and do mundane tasks such as fishing, cooking, driving a car, or summoning demons.

A fun but crude game

A quirky game with a lot of variety, which should make it a fun experience for anyone who is not looking for a specific type of game. The humor can be a little crude in places, so gamers should be aware, though the cartoonish pixel art nature of the game makes it more widely accessible.

PROS

  • A number of gameplay styles result in a varied gameplay experience
  • Collectibles and unlockable levels give a good sense of progression
  • Quirky humor throughout the game’s narrative
  • While part of a series, it’s not necessary to have played the previous games

CONS

  • Some of the humor could be considered too crude by some gamers
